Description

The Red House, with its Beaux-Arts architectural style, stands as the seat of the nation's Parliament, a symbol of fortitude and democracy for the people of Trinidad and Tobago and a wonderful example of heritage restoration. It was also outside the Red House that Britain’s Union Flag was lowered at midnight for the last time in August 1962, as Trinidad and Tobago became independent. Constructed in 1844, the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago opened in the same year that Queen Victoria of England was preparing to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. The colonial Government of Trinidad and Tobago, in recognition of that milestone achievement, coated the Parliament Building in red paint and it subsequently became popularly known as “The Red House”.
