Description
The Nariva Swamp is Trinidad and Tobago's largest freshwater wetland, measuring more than 60 square kilometers. The swamp, which has been designated a Wetland of International Importance, is home to 58 different mammal species, including the West Indian Manatee, Red Howler monkeys, caimans, anacondas, boa constrictors, white-fronted capuchin monkeys, numerous species of parrots, including both the blue-and-gold macaw and red-bellied macaws, as well as many wetland and savanna birds. The 1,408 hectares (3,480 acres) Bush Bush part of the Nariva Swamp was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1968 and as a banned area in 1989.
