SUMMARY:Navratri
DESCRIPTION:Navratri is another very sacred time in the life of Hindus. Navaratri literally means "nine nights" and these specific clusters of nine nights occurs five times during the year. \nThe origin of this celebration goes back to religious text where During Sharad Navratri\, Goddess Durga killed mighty demon Mahishasura. Different religious texts mention separate form of Goddess Durga who killed Mahishasura. Hence\, the victory of Goddess Durga over evil is celebrated during Navratri. \nSharad Navratri occurs during the months of September-October during the bright fortnight. The nine-night cluster is divided such that three of these nights are for worshipping Durga or Kali\, another three dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and three for worshipping Saraswati. Ramleela celebrations also run con-current with Sharad Navaratri. It is a time when Hindus avoid non-vegetarian food and indulge in fasting and lots of praying.

SUMMARY:Santa Rosa First Peoples Heritage Day/Festival
DESCRIPTION:On this day indigenous people of Trinidad and Tobago are celebrated as they have contributed so much to our history and culture. \nThe Caribs of Arima are known to be the direct descendants of the original Amerindian inhabitants of Trinidad. \nIn 1973 the Santa Rosa First Peoples Community Council was incorporated to preserve the culture of the Caribs of Arima and maintain their role in the annual Santa Rosa Festival (dedicated to Santa Rosa de Lima\, the first Catholic saint canonised in the New World). \nThe Santa Rosa First Peoples Carib Community is recognised by government as the legitimate representative of Trinidad and Tobago's indigenous people and in 1993 received a National Award (Chaconia Silver) for work done in the field of culture and community service. \nThe group was also instrumental in influencing the Government to designate October 14th as the official day in acknowledgement and appreciation of our indigenous Amerindian legacy. \nThe Santa Rosa First Peoples festival is celebrated for an entire week around the October 14th observance day with a series of events in Arima.

SUMMARY:Chaguanas Borough Day
DESCRIPTION:The Borough of Chaguanas will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year on October 7th\, 2020. Usually an annual military parade is hosted to commemorate the occasion along with a grand street fest\, however\, due to the Covid-19 pandemic\, celebrations may take a different direction this year. \nChaguanas is the largest of three boroughs existing in Trinidad and Tobago which includes the Borough of Arima and the Borough of Point Fortin. Chaguanas was elevated to Borough status in October 1990. This Borough which prior to 1990\, consisted of 11 municipal districts\, now consists of 8 municipal districts.

SUMMARY:Calypso History Month
DESCRIPTION:October was officially declared "Calypso History Month" in 2002 by TUCO (Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organization). \nCalypsos are a true part of our culture as a people. as it captures our history by telling our stories in song like no history book can. Calypso has been called a poor man's newspaper in times when literacy was not widespread. It traces its roots to African and creole traditions of improvised songs of self-praise and scorn for others\, brought here by enslaved peoples. \nThis year's theme "Calypso\, Beyond Boundaries and Borders"\, pays homage to calypso's influence on cultures around the world and their deep-seeded connection to TT. \nWith the Covid-19 pandemic still a great health concern\, this year the organisation has adapted to a virtual setting and will use October Calypso History events to test preparations for virtual calypso events in 2021. \nSee TUCO'S Calendar of Events here.
