SUMMARY:Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day
DESCRIPTION:Spiritual Shouter Baptist is indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago\, comprising elements of Protestant Christianity and African doctrines and rituals. \nFrom 1917 to 1951 the Spiritual and Shouter Baptist faith in Trinidad was banned from observing their religion in Trinidad by the colonial government of the day. Baptists decided to use the term Spiritual Baptists instead of Shouter Baptists\, to gain respect for their religion. \nFinally\, after much lobbying\, the Bill to repeal the ordinance was passed on 30 March 1951\, as The Repeal of Shouters Prohibition Ordinance. The Spiritual Shouter Baptists were free to practice their Religion. \nThe holiday is marked with processions\, Church services\, performances and religious observances.

SUMMARY:La Divina Pastora Feast
DESCRIPTION:This feast centres around the La Divina Pastora statue (Spanish for “Holy Shepherdess”) in the southern small town of Siparia\, Trinidad on the third Sunday after Easter. \nChristians and Hindus travel from every corner of Trinidad and even Tobago to Siparia and stand in long lines for hours just to touch the feet of the popular statue. Citizens pour into the church to offer flowers\, olive oil and candles to the statue on her feast day. \nA Catholic mission was established in Siparia in the late 1750s\, when Spanish Capuchin priests came to Trinidad through Venezuela; La Divina Pastora is the Capuchins’ patron. Siparia was made a Roman Catholic parish in 1906. It is believed people of Indian descent began making pilgrimages there long before\, after the first indentured labourers arrived in 1845\, and by the 1870s\, the statue was attracting large numbers of Hindus.

SUMMARY:Divali Nagar
DESCRIPTION:The Divali Nagar can be considered as the largest Hindu expositions in Trinidad and showcases East Indian music\, art\, craft\, food\, fashion. \nThis exposition has its roots in the car park of the Mid-Centre Mall\, Chaguanas in late 1986. As the number of patrons grew\, the search began for a new site to host this event. A few year later\, the ‘Nagar’ was eventually given a permanent site on the John Peters Road Extension off the Uriah Butler Highway. \nThis exposition which commences approximately one week before the Divali Holiday\, will be a virtual event 2020 and due to Covid-19. Each night will not only feature some of the best performances from past events\, but it will also feature ‘live’ presentations from special guests and a ‘live’ host taking you through the night’s proceedings.

DESCRIPTION:Ramleela Festival is the play of Lord Ram vs Rawan in an epic battle of good vs evil. \nIn Trinidad and Tobago\, Ramleela is celebrated annually in large open airfields in rural Indian villages for a period of ten days. SUMMARY:COCO Dance Festival
DESCRIPTION:The COCO dance festival was established out of the Contemporary Choreographers’ Collective in Trinidad and Tobago. The sole mission of the organization is to inspire\, encourage and serve the community through creative processes and collaborative endeavours. \nCOCO primarily provides a platform for innovation and experimentation in contemporary dance for emerging and established choreographers in Trinidad and Tobago. They also welcome participation from choreographers in the Caribbean region and beyond. \nThe festival started in 2009\, when dancer and choreographer Sonja Dumas approached fellow veteran choreographers Dave Williams\, Nancy Herrera\, and Nicole Wesley with the idea hosing a contemporary showcase in Queen’s Hall. \nSince then to now\, the COCO Dance Festival has grown by leaps and bounds and continues to attract locals as well as a regional and international audience each year.

SUMMARY:Navratri
DESCRIPTION:Navratri is another very sacred time in the life of Hindus. Navaratri literally means “nine nights” and these specific clusters of nine nights occurs five times during the year. \nThe origin of this celebration goes back to religious text where During Sharad Navratri\, Goddess Durga killed mighty demon Mahishasura. Different religious texts mention separate form of Goddess Durga who killed Mahishasura. Hence\, the victory of Goddess Durga over evil is celebrated during Navratri. \nSharad Navratri occurs during the months of September-October during the bright fortnight. The nine-night cluster is divided such that three of these nights are for worshipping Durga or Kali\, another three dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and three for worshipping Saraswati. Ramleela celebrations also run con-current with Sharad Navaratri. It is a time when Hindus avoid non-vegetarian food and indulge in fasting and lots of praying.

SUMMARY:Santa Rosa First Peoples Heritage Day/Festival
DESCRIPTION:On this day indigenous people of Trinidad and Tobago are celebrated as they have contributed so much to our history and culture. \nThe Caribs of Arima are known to be the direct descendants of the original Amerindian inhabitants of Trinidad. \nIn 1973 the Santa Rosa First Peoples Community Council was incorporated to preserve the culture of the Caribs of Arima and maintain their role in the annual Santa Rosa Festival (dedicated to Santa Rosa de Lima\, the first Catholic saint canonised in the New World). \nThe Santa Rosa First Peoples Carib Community is recognised by government as the legitimate representative of Trinidad and Tobago’s indigenous people and in 1993 received a National Award (Chaconia Silver) for work done in the field of culture and community service. \nThe group was also instrumental in influencing the Government to designate October 14th as the official day in acknowledgement and appreciation of our indigenous Amerindian legacy. \nThe Santa Rosa First Peoples festival is celebrated for an entire week around the October 14th observance day with a series of events in Arima.

DESCRIPTION:The Borough of Chaguanas will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year on October 7th\, 2020. Usually an annual military parade is hosted to commemorate the occasion along with a grand street fest\, however\, due to the Covid-19 pandemic\, celebrations may take a different direction this year. \nChaguanas is the largest of three boroughs existing in Trinidad and Tobago which includes the Borough of Arima and the Borough of Point Fortin. Chaguanas was elevated to Borough status in October 1990. This Borough which prior to 1990\, consisted of 11 municipal districts\, now consists of 8 municipal districts.

DESCRIPTION:October was officially declared “Calypso History Month” in 2002 by TUCO (Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organization). \nCalypsos are a true part of our culture as a people. as it captures our history by telling our stories in song like no history book can. Calypso has been called a poor man’s newspaper in times when literacy was not widespread. It traces its roots to African and creole traditions of improvised songs of self-praise and scorn for others\, brought here by enslaved peoples. \nThis year’s theme “Calypso\, Beyond Boundaries and Borders”\, pays homage to calypso’s influence on cultures around the world and their deep-seeded connection to TT. \nWith the Covid-19 pandemic still a great health concern\, this year the organisation has adapted to a virtual setting and will use October Calypso History events to test preparations for virtual calypso events in 2021. \nSee TUCO’S Calendar of Events here.
