Calypso History Month

October 1, 2020 - October 31, 2020

October was officially declared “Calypso History Month” in 2002 by TUCO (Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organization).

Calypsos are a true part of our culture as a people. as it captures our history by telling our stories in song like no history book can. Calypso has been called a poor man’s newspaper in times when literacy was not widespread. It traces its roots to African and creole traditions of improvised songs of self-praise and scorn for others, brought here by enslaved peoples.

This year’s theme “Calypso, Beyond Boundaries and Borders”, pays homage to calypso’s influence on cultures around the world and their deep-seeded connection to TT.

With the Covid-19 pandemic still a great health concern, this year the organisation has adapted to a virtual setting and will use October Calypso History events to test preparations for virtual calypso events in 2021.
